Introducing Glory's Pep Talk
An advice column on joy, creativity, and the art of living well...
I always need a pep talk. I am constantly talking to myself in the mirror before starting my day; addressing myself in the third person with encouraging yet firm demands. "Glory, you can do THIS!"
Now, "this" could be a range of things - like meeting a looming editorial deadline or simply dropping my son off at daycare. Either way, I gently nudge myself toward completion. Not to toot my own horn but on average I get things done. My attitude tends to be “glass half full” with a touch of healthy sarcasm. I laugh at myself often. I believe in God, giving back, and good luck. And if it means anything to you, I’m a Capricorn.
At the moment my inbox is a disaster BUT I have written two best-selling books and hosted an award-winning podcast with guests like Gabrielle Union, Nikole-Hannah Jones, and Zeba Blay. Progress over perfection, am I right?
I'm super proud of my accomplishments and every single morning I go complete Bring It On in my bathroom. I sincerely believe we all need someone cheering us on. Life is hard. So, my cheering squad starts with me. Maybe this weekly newsletter can do that for you!
Feel free to imagine me singing the chorus of Formation at 7 AM if you need a full visual. “I dream it, I work hard, I grind 'til I own it. I twirl on my haters, albino alligators…”
Well-Read Black Girl (WRBG) launched in 2015, and it’s grown into a whole literary movement! The 16-year-old me could have never imagined the power of Instagram or this literary life, but here I am. I’ve experienced A LOT over the last 6 years - including motherhood, heartbreaks, and the joys & challenges of building an online platform.
I’m hoping to use this space to encourage folks to follow their dreams and share the behind-the-scenes perspective of growing WRBG. I’m so grateful to be in a space where I can share a pep talk or two. Consider this my version of Masterclass with Beyonce lyrics and emojis. Every Tuesday, I’ll share my weekly pep talk along with affirmations, reading recommendations, and writing prompts.
Remember, this is a community space, so please share your questions in the comments below. Thank you, thank you to all of my subscribers. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your support!
Xoxo,
Glory
